"Ave Signor," Mefistofele's first aria from Boito's opera Mefistofele. The Prologue of the opera takes place in heaven. In this aria, Mephistopheles (the Devil) shows up to mock God, the heavenly hosts, and humanity. Thanks to the people at [livejournal.com profile] linguaphiles for helping me figure out a tricky bit of grammar. As always, any remaining mistakes are entirely mine.

Ave Signor. Hail, Lord.
Perdona se il mio gergoPardon me if my jargon
Si lascia un po' da tergo falls a little behind
Le supreme teodie del paradiso; the supreme songs of praise of Paradise;
Perdona se il mio viso pardon me if my face
Non porta il raggio doesn't have the radiance
Che inghirlanda i crini that garlands the locks
Degli alti cherubini; of the high cherubim;
Perdona se dicendo pardon me if in speaking
Io corro rischio I run a risk
Di buscar qualche fischio. of getting some boos.*
Il Dio piccin della piccina terra The little God of the little earth
Ognor traligna ed erra, continually degenerates and goes astray,
E, a par di grillo and, like a cricket
Saltellante, a caso hopping, by chance
Spinge fra gli astri il naso, pokes his nose among the stars,
Poi con tenace fatuità superbathen with stubborn proud fatuousness
Fa il suo trillo nell'erba. makes his trilling in the grass.
Boriosa polve! Tracotato atomo! Arrogant dust! Impertinent atom!
Fantasima dell'uomo! Delusion of man!
E tale il fa And he makes so much of
Quell'ebbra illusione that drunkard's illusion
Che'egli chiama: Ragion, Ragion.which he calls Reason, Reason.
Ah! Sì, Maestro divino, Ah! Yes, divine Master,
In buio fondo to the dark bottom
Crolla il padron del mondo, tumbles the master of the world,
E non mi dà più il cuor, and I no longer have the heart --
Tant' è fiaccato, he is so worn down --
Di tentarlo al mal. to tempt him to evil.
