"Die Frist ist um," the Dutchman's opening monologue from Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman). This is one of my favorite pieces of opera in existence. Listen to it, if you haven't.

Die Frist ist um, und abermals verstrichen sind sieben Jahr'.	The term is up, and once more seven years have elapsed.
Voll Überdruss wirft mich das Meer an's Land.	Full of weariness, the sea casts me up onto land.
Ha! stolzer Ocean! In kurzer Frist sollst du mich wieder tragen!	Ha! proud ocean! In a short time you shall bear me again!
Dein Trotz ist beugsam, doch ewig meine Qual!	Your defiance is changeable, but eternal is my suffering!
Das Heil, das auf dem Land ich suche, nie werd' ich es finden!	Salvation, which I seek on land, I will never find it!
Euch, des Weltmeer's Fluthen, bleib' ich getreu,	I remain true to you, tides of the world-sea,
bis eure letzte Welle sich bricht, und euer letztes Nass versiegt!	until your last wave breaks and your last moisture runs dry!
Wie oft in Meeres tiefsten Schlund	How often into the sea's deepest abyss
stürzt' ich voll Sehnsucht mich hinab,	have I hurled myself down, full of longing,
doch ach! den Tod, ich fand ihn nicht!	but alas! my death, I found it not!
Da, wo der Schiffe furchtbar Grab,	There, where is the fearful grave of ships,
trieb mein Schiff ich zum Klippengrund,	I drove my ship onto the rocks,
doch ach! mein Grab, es schloss sich nicht!	but alas! my grave, it did not close!
Verhöhnend droht' ich dem Piraten,	Taunting, I threatened the pirate,
in wildem Kampfe hofft' ich Tod:	in fierce battle I hoped for death:
"Hier," rief ich, "zeige deine Thaten!	"Here," I cried, "show your exploits!
Von Schätzen voll ist Schiff und Boot!"	The ship and boat are full of treasure!"
